So tonight we had a lovely change from the usual pace of our Tuesday class for a restorative Yin inspired class…..
Yin yoga is a slower paced class to your typical Hatha class; it allows us to target the deep connective tissues of the body (vs. the superficial tissues) and the fascia that covers the body. Many of the postures focus on areas that encompass a joint (hips, sacrum, spine)
This style encourages a meditative approach as the poses are deceivingly easy looking but ask the girls tonight and they will tell you that the intensity in some of the poses is far more than in a regular class. The poses are the same but we hold them for an extended period of time anything from 3 -15 minutes. Within this time frame you will become acutely aware of the importance of the breath to push through the intensity of the asana.
This style of yoga encourages students to be ready to listen to their bodies in a way that is not accessible when you flow through poses in a fast paced practice. You become aware of the feelings, sensations, and emotions as there is nowhere to hide. Yin yoga is often used in programs that deal with addictions, eating disorders, anxiety and traumas.
As we age, our flexibility in the joints decreases significantly and Yin yoga is a wonderful way to maintain that flexibility, something that many take for granted until it is gone.
Some of the benefits of Yin yoga are:
Lubricates and protects joints
Increased flexibility in joints & connective tissue
Decreases stress levels
Increases mobility in the body in particular the hips and joints
Releases the fascia in your body
Brings balance to the body
Great coping tool for stress and anxiety
Thanks for been so open to it girls, I hope ye enjoyed! Xx
